Stainless steel is an iron-based alloy that contains at least 10.5% chromium and other elements, but no more than 50% iron. The chromium reacts with oxygen in the air to form a thin, invisible, protective film that makes stainless steel resistant to corrosion and rust. This film can also self-heal in the presence of oxygen, and quickly repair damage from abrasion, cutting, or machining.
